San Juan: Great Rivers For Anglers

One traveled by species and the San Juan areas ideal for trying to fly fishing. A challenge to investigate and often surprising.

San Juan is a virtually unknown province in terms of fishing, a media coverage on the subject is unusual, and much less in relation to the fly fishing. However, despite its extremely arid geography, exist watersheds to motivate a restless fly trap. The most important is the San Juan River, reason for long talks and busy surveys during my stay in this province of Cuyo.

So run for your community of fly traps, small but extremely powerful and
with important references. The post-war period gives genesis the first flycatchers of the zone, among which stand out Bruno Ponizie, creator of the Bru-Pon flies; the Gringo more and Payo Erostarbe, which is shared with the highs of the mouth of the Chimehuin. After the foundations of the pioneers, the Association of fishing fly from San Juan, which definitely installed the concept of the catch and release in the province was founded in 2001. Today, its successor, the young and vigorous Association anglers San Juan, continues the hard legacy of educating, caring for and control the waters of the province. During the last years this NGO works synergistically with the inspectors of the Ministry of State for environment and sustainable development. Increasingly abundant controls, with requests for permissions and stealthy raids, are reflected in the increase in the populations of fish in many key sites.

Basin of the river San Juan
In an extremely arid area, where rain less than 250 mm per year, the rivers are open veins that pump life. Wet years brought the bonanza, and the reverse occurs with droughts, carrying 5 years innterrumpidos in San Juan. This year it is expected a “strong boy”, and the illusion of reversing a deeply disturbing picture with heavy snowfall.

The San Juan River basin is the most important of the province, because covers 38.462 km2, i.e. 45% of its surface. It is the main tributary of the Desaguadero River, water spine of the Cuyo region. Joined the Colorado River its length reaches about 350,000 km2, becoming the largest watershed entirely Argentina. But since 1941, when Mendoza built the El Nihuil dam, stopped runoff into the bañados del Atuel, which turned into a desert, producing a population exodus.

Species and areas
Originating in the San Juan basin fish are perch, catfish otunos, of the torrent
and “dientudos” tremendous ideals for dry, nymphs and ultra-light equipment. To them
add them indigenous fish relocated, as the bonaerense silverside, which proliferates in great manner in the reservoirs. Among the exotic trout are arch Rainbow, Brown and Brook trout, who entered San Juan from successive crops from
1930 and of course the Holy carp all inhabit it.
