To create fake flies, as you can see from the list of materials, you must have a small set of tools of the trade: but don’t be scared, you can retrieve all at any store that specializes in the art of fishing and this is not a big investment. To get started you can also buy a simple starter kits. We start by creating a wet fly, the one that sinks. First you have to lock the hook into the clamp, establishing the tip between the arms. I recommend using a hook 6 measuring or 8, complete with attack facing down. Then pass the FLOSS in beeswax. Hold between the fingers of one hand one end of the silk thread along the shank of the hook and use your other hand to let them do some laps around the stem down to the warp. Trim then the yarn in surplus.
Continue to wrap the silk on the hook, until you create a layer that, starting from the attack, attain the curvature. Using the tweezers to hackle, blocked the silk thread, so it doesn’t slip off. From a feather cut a 5 mm long piece of ibis and fix it with 2 or 3 laps on the curvature of the silk thread. Wrap some silver tinsel and repeat the process of bandage, applying another layer of silk, going in the direction of the attack of the hook. At this point it is urgent clarification: the “hackle” is a technical term to indicate a Feather (usually by gallo) who generally wraps around the hook. This clarified, I recommend to be careful to leave enough space to insert the ackle and wings. Then step back with the tinsel and the wind along the hook in the direction of the attack and fix it with 2-3 rounds of silk thread. Then cut the tinsel.
Now pull the barbs at the base of the soft hackle. Hold the tip, put the thumb and forefinger over the hackle, from top to bottom, in order to separate the beards. Tie the base of hackle, then grab for the tip with tweezers suitable and wrap it 3 or 4 times around the shank of the hook. Very gently, wrap silk between the barbs of the hackle and fissatene then the tip with 1-2 laps of silk. It is done: missing only one coat of clear varnish to finish the job. You only need a light coat, preferably to be applied also on the pens. Let dry at least a couple of hours.
On the other hand, if you were to create a dry fly, use a rooster hackle: these, being rigid, help keep afloat the fly. A dry fly very simple to implement is the so-called “pheasant”. A curiosity: the use of fur, feathers or pens of animals is called “dubbing”. It used a hook from 10, 12 or 14, with upturned attack and follow the same procedure of wet fly. Put the hook into the clamp, waxed floss and avvolgetene a layer around the shank of the hook. To make the tail, related some pheasant feathers.
Add then the other, to create an imitation of the body, with the Golden tinsel. Wind then FLOSS, returning to the attack of the hook and be careful to leave the space that serves to tie the hackle. Wrap the pheasant tail barbs around the shank of the hook and fix them close to the attack. At this point you have to pass the tinsel over beards, by tightening it with accurate spirals and fasten with 2-3 rounds of silk. Attention to the length of the hackle, which must have the long beards .5 1 time and the distance between the point and the shank of the hook.
Prepare the hackle and mount it as a wet fly. With tweezers wrap most of hackle around the hook while back toward the curvature and tighten. Keep in mind that in this case the hackle should be thicker than for wet fly. Trim excess feather pieces and nascondetene ends with a few rounds of silk thread. All you have to do is add the finishing touches, passing a bit of paint with metallic needle as you would for a wet fly and you’re done. Surely the first time you will feel a bit awkward and the result may not satisfy you, but don’t let that put you off and you will see that, with a little practice, you will become an expert in the creation of artificial fly fishing baits.
