Freshwater Fishing in Corsica

Posted in: Fishing Equipment | 0

End of July I was with the motorcycle on “Europe tour” in five different countries, and even though I knew that we had a tight program ahead of us, I could not help me, before to see what fishing technically so goes to Corsica, our longest stay place. I came across the following information in advance and as they might be of interest to one or the other, I am them here again shortly:

  1. Angelschein: no fishing permit is required for sea fishing in Corsica, as well as on the French mainland. For the freshwater fishing a license is necessary, you can get them on Corsica in the official points of sale, but also in some tobacco shops. If you would like to have clarified before the holidays, you can buy a daily or weekly ticket even online.

2. Mögliche target fish: In the Mediterranean Sea to Corsica, there are numerous interesting species: sea bream, Wolf fish, tuna, sea trout, plaice, and countless other great fish you can bring luck on land or on the boat with the necessary Know-How and a little bit. But also the offer regarding the types of freshwater fish can be seen. In addition to Pike and Zander, the island is especially interesting for the trout and river eel fishing due to their unique nature (50 mountains above 2000 m above sea level). Black perch, that there are only a few kilometers south which Italian island Sardinia in abundance, are not according to my information on Corsica.

Because one is luggage very limited on the motorcycle, you had to previously set which of the many interesting options we wanted to address. For various reasons (ignorance about availability of a cheap boat for sea fishing, no fishing experience on the Mediterranean Sea, volume of necessary equipment) I decided to try it in the Corsican mountains trout. I grabbed a small art bait box together for me and my brother Luis and bought quickly two cheap telescope rods at Angeljoe, which perfectly fit into my motorcycle bags. And away the wild ride could go. Once across Germany over the Alps (via the Timmelsjoch) through northern Italy’s went through in Savona to Genoa on the ferry and in Corsica, we drove several hours from the port of Bastia on beautiful coastal roads again to Cargèse, where we wanted to stay for a week.

Although I had informed me in advance, which should be the most interesting rivers in our area for trout fishing (Sagone, Liamone), but I had found information on good places anywhere. It was learned little from the locals. First of all most of them exclusively on the sea fished, secondly it anyway not so much surprised me that no hot spots given to us. Also in Germany is often not too extravagant treated on the level with information. In the first days, in which we made the one or two day tour with our girls, we always kept open the eyes and soon saw some interesting points of Sagone, but above all to the Liamone. High in the mountains, to the Liamone, near Vico, there is a bridge, swim at the many vacationers and locals in so-called “pools”. The river accumulates here like a plateau in natural water reservoirs and invites you to a pleasant cooling. We went there several times to let go’s well natural Jacuzzis. Because of the other bathers is there not to think of fishing, but the structure looked so good for trout, that we decided to come back to the fishing and are looking for a deserted.

On the last day of our stay of Corsica, it was then so far. We grabbed the bikes, drove up to the mountains and turned off at the bridge at Vico. Then we hiked times in the River, times over rock hopping and climbing for two the Liamone high, until we were all alone in the Corsican mountains after about twenty minutes. We packed up our equipment and began to be fishing all interesting from our point of view places from bottom to top. And because of the clear water we saw too soon the first smaller trout as well as several River eels! Inconspicuous they were in the shadow of rocks against the current set. Now we were close! We thought. While Luis exclusively with his favorite trout lures (Salmo Hornets), with whom he made super experiences in Norway and Austria, fished, I have been less patient. I regularly changed the bait: lure, Spinner, lures, rubber insects, the trout were thoroughly unimpressed. We pass the bait tempting them, they swam even briefly to the page, then go back to their Stammplätzen.

We began to doubt some of our equipment. Had we should rely on lures might not alone? The French trout needs maybe some natural, worms, grasshoppers, or some cheese and red wine? Luis began to search for useful creatures under stones, but he was so unsuccessful. Maybe we had caught also just still not the right time. After all, we fished just times effectively for two hours. Really not much, especially when you consider that trout are truly not easy to trick. At all, nothing could tarnish our mood in. Who’s with his brother on one of the most beautiful places on Earth, in brilliant sunshine from the top and cool mountain water from the bottom, not in a good mood, we can not really help the! We continue blithely marched the River up and tried it again and again. Unfortunately the time was already a little bit short because the way back was still imminent and to the last supper in Corsica we wanted to be back on time in the Bay. We made us so to exploiting two last levels, before we again wanted to make the trip.

I saw last for us on the plateau of the day then something big silver Flash. I threw a Mepps spinner in the immediate vicinity, and in fact: the rod was bent! Now don’t lose! I was full of adrenaline, my brother got ready to land the fish, he also wanted to see him ashore. We put him out of the water and took dimensions: 58 cm! My absolute PB! Still a nice photo and quickly back into the cool water! We were both overjoyed that it had worked out yet!

I was of the opinion that now is the perfect time to stop fishing and on the way back to us, but Luis was completely different. “Come on, above we fish the pool 15 minutes, then we go, I promise!” I could cut off impossible request him, even though we were already overdue. We climbed up so another 50 meters to the river and fished on. I told Luis, but sometimes with a spinner to try it, but he remained stubborn in his lure. And behold, after just a few casts his Rod bent is huge! Again a strong trout! Luis cranked the fish patiently an and this time the luck remained loyal to us, we were able to fly the next magnificent specimen! The tape revealed fascinating 61 centimeters. The largest trout, which had begun Luis ever!

Proudly, he removed his favorite trout lure and released the fish. We looked at the clock, it was high time to pack the belongings. We stowed the complete equipment in a backpack, also to not to come more in the fix of some throws and ran down the River as fast as we could. Without accident on the sometimes slippery rocks after some time, we reached the bridge, put us on our bikes, came roaring down the mountain and made it somehow just in time for dinner. For both of us an incredible day we will never forget! Who fishes on unknown terrain, never easy does it. You have doubt of course faster, if it is not running, but again, fishing is of course often a question of patience. Next time we will try to drive, with locals on the sea because we have seen great catches on photos that have made us pretty hot on the Mittelmeertrolling. All in all not only because of the fishing. is Corsica a wonderful place and absolutely recommended despite the comparatively high prices. Up soon guys, my brother and I are excited now first incredibly the LMAB-summer tour, in which we will see many of you!
