Fishing for Turbot

Welcome again to a new report of species, today at PescaCosmar we are going to talk about the fishing of Turbot, a curious fish similar to the sole that is in areas that are more accessible. It is a perfect specimen to practice bottom fishing, as it is not hidden too much between rocks but in sandy or muddy bottoms.

The species

As we have always said, knowing the fish will give you all the information you need for successful fishing. Here we have our friend the Psetta Maxima better known as turbot, is a  pleuronectiforme  within the family Scophthalmidae.

Morphology

Like most flatfish, it has a nearly circular rhomboidal shape. Both eyes are on the left side, that is, the side facing the surface, which also has tuberculosis seos capable of camouflaging in any detrital background. The dorsal fin is elongated and is born very close to the face. The right side always lies on the sand so it is totally depigmented and without scales.

Sizes

Turbot is a fish that can reach considerable sizes, passing even 100 cm in length and 15 kg in weight. Catches are usually around 60 cm and females are always larger than Turbot is a fish that can reach considerable sizes, passing even 100 cm in length and 15 kg in weight. Catches are usually around 60 cm and females are always larger than males.

Habitad

The Psetta Maxima is a specimen that can be found in the Mediterranean Sea, the Atlantic, the Bay of Biscay, and even in the North and Baltic Sea, as well as in the Channel. Round both shallow waters when young, and deep water up to 120 meters once it reaches reaching larger sizes. Although it prefers muddy or soft sandy bottoms, it is also easy to find it near breakwaters and docks at certain times of the year.

Feeding

The Rodaballos are carnivorous predators little voracious. They feed on benthic fish, but occasionally they can catch certain crustaceans and mollusks.

Reproduction

The reproductive stage begins in the month of February and lasts until April, however sometimes this cycle can also be seen between May and July. Each female expels her eggs every two or four days, adding millions of eggs in a single season.

In their early days, the small ones are symmetrical on both sides, but once they have passed two months or even before, the left eye moves to the right and begins its adaptation in the

Curiosities

Although the Turbot is not a very coveted fish, its meat is excellent although rather prickly. For this reason they are grown in the majority of the farms in the world for commercial consumption.

Its mouth although at first sight seems tiny can open it to incredible dimensions, being able to feed itself of very big fish.

It is not a fast or very daring fish, it can be caught with the hands without much effort when it is within reach, and if it escapes probably to move us a couple of meters we will find it hunting as if nothing had happened.

Other names given to the Rodaballo are Clavud in Asturias, Remol in Baleares, Erreboillo in the Basque Country and Turbot in Catalonia.

Turbot Fishing with Cane

We are talking about an easily accessible fish with little impetus and swimming skills, we might think that it is a simple day, however you have to know some things to really succeed with big turbot fishing.

When and where to fish turbots?

The Rodaballo is a species that can be captured at any time of the year , both in winter and in summer there are good chances of making us with good specimens, however there are certain variations in the areas where we have to look for them according to the time and the hours of the day.

In winter the Rodaballos come to the docks to get warm, just as the food on the sand banks is scarce due to the heat or the cold, the turbines swim towards the rocks or more stony areas to look for food.

Rest they are getting into the shoals, right where the currents end. They will become bigger and bigger the deeper and farther you throw your gear.

For fishing to surfcasting large specimens will have to wait for spawning times, as large females approach the shore.

Techniques for fishing turbot

Popularly the bottom fishing and surfcasting give the best results for this fishing. However, others prefer fly fishing, submarine fishing or fishing.

Fishing Equipment for Turbot

We have already said that the Turbot is not a fighter fish, but this does not mean that we will use a little strong equipment. Because of its shape to take the turbot can become very heavy. How to get a few heavy clothes from the bottom. Without being able to do it at high speed since we could strip off the hook by cutting the fish’s mouth.

Turbot fishing rods

Whether you use a spinning rod, buoy or surfcasting, choose those that have the longest possible length, in turn their action must be parabolic and flexible with a hybrid toe. The cane should be made of strong and lightweight materials to withstand the weight of large catches. Considering the great distances in turn, it is vital that the rings are big enough to help the yarn pass.

Reel of pescade turbot

Depending also on the area and technique used, in general the reel must possess sufficient capacity to reach great distances. And great power collection. It is also important that the braking and picking speed can be graded to suitability, since in turbot fishing this process is quite slow.

Turbot fishing threads

The monofilaments thick diameter as mother line combined at its end with threads of fluorocarbon will blast. The rigging should be very clean and simple using large hooks and dark colors.

Baits and lures for turbot

Strong odor fish and tough meat are the most recommended to tempt our friend, however leaded hooks with plastic tails bring excellent results in bottom fishing.

General advice and fishing procedure

First and foremost, take special care to tie the rigging to the mother line very well; If the weight is greater than the resistance of the knot, you will always lose the prey. Once the bait or bait has been released, it is necessary to wait for it to sink to the bottom, so it is essential that it has the ideal weight to sink quickly.

If the fish does not itch after making 10 touches with the reed to move the lure;Picks up the line quickly and throws it again in another zone. The Rodaballos do not move unless their food is very close to them, the advantage in this case is that they are usually found in a group and it is easy to get them to bite, you just have to launch quite often.

When you feel the tension of the bite, nail it safely but without making a movement too violent. Then start collecting slowly by balancing the weight on the cane. Do not do it fast or you could cut the mouth of the raspallón and lose it.

To get him out of the water, help him with a sacadera. Once you grab experience you will be able to go in search of sole in deeper areas.

“We hope you enjoyed our report. Do not hesitate to ask any questions about your equipment or technique. Or bring your recommendations to the rest of the reader community. See you soon and good fishing! “
